| In the Mist of Time, a Long Journey from Yangtze Valley in China |
| There
are many sources of information of Balinese people origin. They are Balinese
and Javanese texts and scriptures, Indian literature, and archaeological
as well as linguistic findings. Following is a description based on the
mixture of the sources mentioned above.
Long time ago, around ten thousands of years ago, developed a civilization on the banks of Yangtze river in Yunnan area in southern China. This civilization already posses technology on farming. The technology includes wet and dry rice cultivation. For some reasons some of these people began to move to the south. Recent archaeological discovery, together with the result of linguistic study, uncover that these people migrated first to what now known as Taiwan. From there they moved to Luzon of the Philippines. Some five thousands of years ago they continued the journey to Borneo and to other places, part of them is what we call now as Indonesian archipelago, including Bali. In the new land they implemented the technology they brought, such as wet rice cultivation and bronze technology. But also important is that they continue to embrace their ancient culture of ancestor and nature worship. This custom still widely practiced, even today, in many part of Asia. Bali is among the places where it is people hold this custom strongly until now. But when the waves of migrations arrived, in some of the islands in Indonesia already lived the indigenous human inhabitants. The appearance of these native people is said like the ancestors of Papuan people and Australian aborigines. But most of this so called Java man - that some people understand it as the human evolution's missing link discovered - already moved to the other part of the region even tens of thousands of years earlier than the arrival of the people from China. They move to the eastern part of the archipelago and to Australia. The time is approximately fifty thousands of years before Christ. Meanwhile the people from China also moved to many part of the world, from Madagascar island near Africa to modern New Zealand as Maori people. In Indonesia and Bali, they evolved to what now locally known as Melayu race, the race that some of it's members interestingly assume them selves as indigenous people of Indonesia and Indonesian Chinese that arrived later as the "guest". One of the reason is probably because of lack of understanding of this historical facts. The government of Indonesia, together with the people and many informal leaders of anti racialism and discrimination, work hard to bring harmony to the whole of Indonesian people. In Bali, at least there are archaeological findings about these Chinese immigrants which enter Bali around two thousands of years ago. In this island they lived and bred for many generations. Because of relative remoteness of the place - Bali is separated with it's two neighbor islands by two straits with their strong currents -, for thousands of years the people of Bali lived on their own. Physically, the Balinese , as well as Melayu race in general, is indisputably Asian. The size and posture of the body, the black and straight hair, small nose etc. is all Asian. The immaterial qualities, such as belief in spirits and souls, "softness" and less "extrovert" behavior compared to their western counterparts, which are quite common for the people of Asia, so are for the Balinese. Currently globalization penetrated almost all places and civilizations of the world. And it is interesting to observe how this open minded people who proud to their values, deal and cope with this new global environment. |
